“The career experiences of disabled people in the legal profession: Future strategies for change”

– Conference on 24 January 2020

 

As a follow-up to the UN’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December, and the excellent launch meeting for our new community IP Ability, we wanted to flag up a project and an event that could have a massive impact on disability confidence in the legal sector.

Natasha Hirst, a researcher on the “Legally Disabled?” project, spoke about her work at the IP Ability launch. She and her colleagues will be revealing more about their findings at a conference on 24 January 2020. It’s an opportunity that’s sure to be of interest to disabled people, their allies and their employers throughout the IP professions, as well as to those who want to join the sector but aren’t certain about the support and career prospects available to them.

We asked Natasha to tell us more.  She wrote:

Led by Prof Debbie Foster of Cardiff Business School, the “Legally Disabled?” project is the first of its kind exploring the experiences of disabled people working across the legal profession. The report of findings analyses data from 8 focus groups, 55 one-to-one interviews and over 250 online survey responses.

This ground-breaking project will be launching its findings and recommendations for the legal profession on 24 January 2020 at the British Academy in London, in a conference running from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm. The full report will also be launched online.

There will be a range of speakers and practical workshops to discuss the findings and how the profession can take action to implement the recommendations of the research. For disabled legal professionals, senior leaders and D&I professionals with a responsibility to promote disability equality and inclusion, this event is not to be missed!
