We’ve been working with the social mobility and outreach charity In2scienceUK for several years now, through our Careers in Ideas campaign. We’ve been delighted to see them partner with so many IP sector employers. Here’s an update on their 2024 activities, with information about how your organisation can get involved too.

About In2scienceUK

In2scienceUK gives young people from low-income backgrounds the opportunity to gain essential insights into science, technology, engineering and mathematics (“STEM”) careers with dedicated professional mentors. By providing bespoke placements, research activities and careers support, young people can progress to further education and STEM careers.

The In2scienceUK logoThe young people that take part in our In2Stem Programme are recipients of free school meals, have parents with no higher education experience and live in areas in which progression to higher education is low. These young people are significantly less likely to progress to STEM-skilled careers. With In2scienceUK’s support young people gain the experience, skills and confidence they need to reach their full potential.

Diversity and inclusion in IP

The Intellectual Property Office’s Inclusion & Diversity Report 2022-2023 highlights the need for greater gender equality and access to specialist skills engagement activities to attract those from under-represented groups into the industry. By working in collaboration with In2scienceUK, leading IP industry partners are introducing diverse groups of young people to careers in IP and contributing to social mobility through public engagement.

Partners for diversity in IP

In2scienceUK would like to thank our committed network of IP partners and IP Inclusive for enabling us to expand and develop new programmes in line with young people’s needs across the UK. We are proud to be partnered with the following IP firms and industry regulatory partners:

• IPReg
• HGF
• Appleyard Lees
• Mathys & Squire
• GSK IP
• The IP Federation
• D Young & Co

In2ScienceUK’s committed IP partners have helped over 150 young people access innovative STEM placements in line with their own education and career interests since 2021. IP firms, regulatory and membership organisations have also provided young people with an essential insight into career pathways in IP through outreach workshops and panel sessions.

In2scienceUK’s ambitions for 2025

Every year In2scienceUK receives over 3,000 applications from young people passionate about STEM careers. Sadly we are unable to provide every applicant with a placement. By working with additional IP firms and professionals we aim to support more young people in need of greater STEM inclusion and advance social mobility within IP through partnership.

If your firm would like to sponsor a cohort of young people and make a positive contribution to diversity, inclusion and social mobility in IP, please email Luke McKelvey, In2scienceUK’s dedicated Development Manager, via [email protected].
