Interested in widening the talent pool you recruit from?
Providing careers talks for universities is a good way to improve our recruitment prospects. But how can we engage students more effectively? How can we raise awareness of our fascinating and rewarding professions and encourage more people to get involved? How can we get a toe in the door when university staff are busy with their existing curriculum and students focused on their core studies? How does university careers support usually work? Which faculties should we target and what messages might appeal to the students in them?
And if we want to do our bit to improve the diversity of our intake (for instance in terms of social mobility, or gender or ethnicity balance), what special measures should we take and where can we best direct our efforts?
This Careers in Ideas Week webinar attempted to answer these questions, equipping the audience with ideas and best practices for more effective university outreach. Patent attorney and business/careers consultant Julie Barrett (Purposive Step Consulting) drew on her own experiences working with university students to develop and apply their talents, and told us about her involvement in outreach through the Careers in Ideas campaign. Lisa Redman and Jenny Vaughan from the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) introduced IP Tutor, IP Tutor Plus and other IPO tools for raising the profile of IP – and its link with both current studies and future careers – among university students and staff. All three shared some tremendous practical tips for engaging with university audiences, exploring how to make good use of the IPO and Careers in Ideas resources in order to inspire the next generation to join the IP professions.
Our final speaker, aspiring IP lawyer Ayesha Malik, shared some additional student insights into the delivery of careers information and advice, covering what students want to hear about and the platforms they want to hear it on.
