Informal online get-togethers
Wednesday 1 December 2021
4 – 5 pm
Our last Women in IP coffee dates of 2021 took place on Wednesday 1 December at 4 pm.
We were delighted to have been able to co-organise this event with Chicago Women in IP (ChiWIP), who partnered with us on our popular “Views from across the pond” event in June 2021. It was a great chance to network with IP professionals outside the UK, following up perhaps on friendships forged in the summer, and to exchange thoughts about promoting equality, diversity and inclusion.
As for our September coffee dates, this was held as a single online event with discussions taking place in smaller breakout rooms to give people plenty of chance to chat. It was organised by Emily Teesdale from the Women in IP committee.
Our broad discussion theme this time was “intent vs impact”. Under that heading, we invited attendees to explore the following questions together:
- Have you witnessed examples where there was a difference between a speaker’s intent and the impact on the recipient? (For example, “I don’t see colour” or “You speak the language very well.”)
- Do you think this is magnified in any particular setting within IP?
- What could we do in such a situation where a friend, family member or colleague’s well-intentioned statement has a negative impact on the recipient? All suggestions welcome…
Our coffee dates are open to all UK-based IP professionals and in this case to ChiWIP supporters as well. We welcome people of all genders.
This event was free. So are all our resources. We think it’s important to keep IP Inclusive the right side of the paywall.
That said, we do need money to keep the show on the road, so if you enjoyed the event please consider contributing to our 2021-22 fundraising campaign.
