Our last Women in IP virtual coffee date of 2023 was on Wednesday 13 December at 12.30 pm, online.

It was organised by Women in IP committee members Michelle Montgomery ([email protected]) and Wendy Peet ([email protected]), who matched delegates up with an appropriate host for a series of smaller informal discussions.

Our theme

Women in IP has been focusing this year on supporting women throughout their IP careers. As part of that, discussions in this coffee date were about self promotion – what works, what doesn’t, the difference it can make and how to maintain your authenticity while doing it.

Some questions we suggested people think about beforehand included:

1. Do you spend time considering what success looks like for you in the work place and in your life as a whole? Can you articulate that?
2. Do you think doing a good job is enough? If not, what else is required to promote yourself to your employer? Do you have any examples of good ways to promote yourself?
3. Do you understand what is needed to get to the next level in your firm?
4. Is there any transparent discussion in your firm about what it takes to get to the next level?
5. If not, how could you prompt that discussion in your firm?
6. Do you ask for pay rises? If you don’t, should you?
7. If you want to get to the next level, have you told everybody that? What do you think about that?
8. Are the people managers in your organisation actually trained in people management?
9. Have you come across the concept of PIE for career progression (perfomance, image, exposure)? If so, is that useful?

Who was it for?

Our Women in IP coffee dates are open to all UK-based IP professionals, regardless of gender, role or career level.

We’d love you to invite a guest along – someone in a different role or at a different career level, perhaps; an ally or potential ally; or a colleague who’s not yet involved with IP Inclusive. They’ll be most welcome!

This event was free. So are all our resources. We think it’s important to keep IP Inclusive on the right side of the paywall.
