Who is Martingale Foundation?

The Martingale Foundation is focused on transforming access to postgraduate education in STEM for talented individuals from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. Through providing fully funded Masters and PhD Scholarships, including a living-wage stipend, tuition fees, and research costs, Martingale supports the next generation of postgraduate students to thrive in research at leading universities across the UK.

Scholars are supported by a high-quality development programme designed to help them thrive during their studies and transition into impactful research and industry careers. This includes Solve for X, a week-long retreat held in the second year of their PhD, where scholars work in interdisciplinary groups to apply their academic knowledge to tackle industry challenges and develop proposed solutions, before pitching to a panel of expert judges at the end of the week.A photo of two students working on a problem. both are smiling, one has a tape measure around his neck and is holding a ruler, the other is holding a pen.

How can you support Martingale Foundation?

Martingale is currently seeking partners for Solve for X: Where Academia Meets Industry, to be held in June 2026. Hosted at the University of Cambridge in partnership with the Isaac Newton Institute, Newton Gateway to Mathematics, and St Johnโ€™s College, Martingale Scholars, exceptional postgraduate students studying mathematical sciences, will work in interdisciplinary teams on open-ended problems set by industry partners. The programme combines training, mentoring, and pitching to develop both innovative solutions and the Scholarsโ€™ professional skills.

Corporate partners are encouraged to bring forward unsolved, complex challenges that would benefit from innovative, data-driven or mathematical perspectives. Partners will work closely with Martingaleโ€™s Programme Team and the Isaac Newton Institute to develop the challenges and are also invited to engage directly with our Scholars through internship opportunities or joining the judging panel for the final pitches.

You can find out more by downloading our Solve for X brochure here. If your organisation is interested in partnering with Martingale on this innovative programme, please reach out to Asha New, Partnerships Officer at [email protected] to explore potential collaboration opportunities.
