“While I had previously been on the fence with respect to applying for jobs in IP, this taster day really gave me a push in the right direction.”
– Ted Kehoe, Summer of IP alumnus
During the summer of 2023 our Careers in Ideas team coordinated a programme of outreach activities and events, under the Summer of IP banner. They included introductions to the basics about IP and the careers available here, some more specific events to showcase particular types of career, and opportunities such as taster sessions and work experience placements from IP sector employers.
We asked participants to tell us about their Summer of IP experiences, what they learnt and what they enjoyed the most. We’ll be publishing the resultant blog posts on our website News and Features page throughout the autumn. This one is from Ted Kehoe, a final year natural sciences student at the University of Cambridge. He tells us about his experiences at a Summer of IP taster day run by Reddie & Grose, and how the firm’s warm welcome gave him the incentive he needed to pursue a career in IP.
Ted writes:
Previously, I’d only ever considered doing a PhD after the conclusion of my studies β the concept of a patent attorney was completely unknown to me until the final term of my bachelor’s degree. After hearing this mentioned off-hand in a careers talk, I did a bit of research and began to entertain the thought of branching out a little after university (though perhaps, at the time, only considering this as a remote possibility). After seeing an advertisement for Reddie & Grose’s Summer of IP open day on the IP Careers website, I decided to apply; no amount of research online about a particular career or firm can really compare to visiting in person and getting a feel for the environment. I was pleased to receive an invitation to the open day, and gladly accepted.
