This summer’s school exam results were hardly good news on the social mobility front (see, for example, https://www.suttontrust.com/news-opinion/all-news-opinion/sutton-trust-response-to-results-day-2023/). But there are things we can all do to help.

In January 2023, our Careers in Ideas team collaborated with CIPA and three social mobility charities on a webinar exploring how individual professionals can “give something back” by helping to inspire, mentor and coach students from less advantaged backgrounds. One of the charities that took part in that webinar was The Access Project, which helps young people from disadvantaged backgrounds gain places at top universities. They’ve provided this guest post for us to explain the work they do, and the part that individual IP professionals like YOU can play to improve access to rewarding professional jobs.

They write:

Did you know that the educational attainment gap has barely shifted in nearly 20 years?

Recent exam results show that young people who are in under-served areas are still less likely to go to university than their affluent peers.

At The Access Project, we believe that where you come from shouldn’t determine your future. That’s why we work with dedicated volunteer tutors who change the lives of young people across the country, every year. Our programme works to increase the confidence and aspirations of each young person and provide them with support in a subject they are studying.

Tristan, a year 10 student, said: “I enrolled on The Access Project because it was a fantastic opportunity that I couldn’t let go to waste. The point of The Access Project is to help children aim high and succeed in life. I am looking forward to (maybe) getting high grades. Going to university with this project really makes me feel optimistic about my future.”

In 2022, through dedicated volunteering, 53% of The Access Project students were placed at top universities, compared to just 33% of statistically similar peers outside of our programme.

This year, we need more tutors than ever to help young people achieve their goals.

Could you give an hour a week, online, to support a young person who needs it?

We’ll give you everything you need to succeed as a tutor, including comprehensive training, lesson plans and increased confidence in a subject of your choice. You’ll need to be a university graduate or on the way to completing your degree to take part.
