The University of Law have been supporting our Careers in Ideas outreach campaign, helping us to spread the word about IP careers across their various regional campuses. Ahead of Careers in Ideas Week (16-22 November 2020), they’ve asked us to help publicise their student mentoring scheme and ask if any IP professionals would like to be involved. This could be the perfect way to mark Careers in Ideas Week with some positive action: sign up for their scheme by Friday 20 November and take the opportunity to inspire new recruits into the IP sector.

Their Careers Manager Amy Walker tells us more in her post below. If you’d like more information, you can contact her at [email protected].

Amy writes:

As we settle into a new academic year, the University of Law are once again looking at our Mentoring Scheme. This year more than ever we are committed to helping students achieve their goals despite the setbacks we have faced due to Covid-19, and we once again are asking for your help to do this.

We are running our mentoring scheme a little later this year, with the launch in January 2021 and it will run through until July 2021. We will be advertising the scheme to students around mid-November, with a view to matching students and mentors in December, ready for a January launch. The scheme will be open to our LPC, GDL and BPC students across both our Leeds and Sheffield Campuses.

How will the scheme be different during Covid?

Usually, we run a formal launch on campus where we introduce you to your Mentee. Unfortunately, we will not be able to do this due to the current circumstances. However, we will send an initial email introducing both Mentors and Mentees.

We expect to keep the scheme as low maintenance as possible and encourage our students to be the ones in charge of managing the relationship. All we require of mentors is that they agree to offer a minimum of four contact points, at which discussions on areas of practice, the realities of work as a lawyer and wider career management issues might take place. We ask that one of these contact points is a virtual “face-to-face” (so Zoom or Skype), but the others could be via email or telephone.

Signing up

If you would be happy to take part in the 2020/2021 Mentoring Scheme, please complete this short JotForm by Friday 20 November.

You can also download this document with more detail about the Mentoring Scheme.

We are always looking for new mentors to keep up with the increase in students we take on each year. If you know anyone who would like be involved, please pass on my contact details. Anyone from a 2nd year trainee upwards can get involved in the scheme.

Kind regards,
