Summer of IP 2024: watch this space!

We’re working on plans for the 2024 re-run of Summer of IP. Please keep an eye on this page, and on the Careers in Ideas LinkedIn page, for updates.

If you’re an IP sector employer and would like to include an activity or event in this year’s programme (for example a taster session, work experience placement or workshop), please visit the Summer of IP 2024 webpage or get in touch with Helen Smith via [email protected]. There are examples below of the activities provided last year, along with feedback from the students who attended.

About Summer of IP

What is it?

Summer of IP is an outreach campaign led by our Careers in Ideas team. Its purpose is to raise awareness of IP-related careers, encourage a wider range of people to pursue them, and improve access to them by providing “taster” activities and guidance. Longer-term, of course, our aim is to increase equality, diversity and inclusivity within the UK’s IP sector.

The campaign includes events to raise awareness about IP generally and the careers available there, along with activities such as open days, talks, mentoring sessions and even work experience opportunities. Careers in Ideas provides the introductory materials and a central list of all the available activities.

When is it?

Our first Summer of IP took place throughout the summer of 2023. We launched officially on Monday 3 July 2023 – but opportunities and event sign-ups had already started to become available from May.

We hope to repeat the campaign in future summers. Watch this space…!

Who is it for?

The Summer of IP events and resources are open to anyone who’s interested in learning more about a career in IP. Our aim is to attract secondary school students, university students, graduates and career changers. With the help of our Careers in Ideas contacts, for example outreach and social mobility charities, we promote the campaign in particular to people in currently under-represented groups.

The 2023 programme included a range of activities featuring different IP-related roles and for people at different stages of their education or career. Here’s a quick summary for participants.

We asked Summer of IP participants to tell us about the activities and events they attended, what they learned from them and what they enjoyed. We've been publishing their reports throughout the autumn of 2023. Click on the cards below to find out what they said. Plus there's a review of the campaign as a whole with a summary of employer and student feedback and a look ahead to our 2024 plans.

Click on this card for a summary of the introductory events and recordings from our Careers in Ideas team. We recommend you learn more from these before you seek out opportunities with specific employers.
