One of our earliest Charter signatories, the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO), has some great plans for this year’s IP Inclusive Week. One of its events is cleverly built around Inter Faith Week, which, as in 2018, coincides with IP Inclusive Week (you can read our 2018 post about this here).

The IPO have kindly opened their two IP Inclusive Week events to all IP Inclusive supporters. This is is what they’ve told us about their plans:

The IPO is a Charter signatory and keenly supports IP Inclusive in different ways, from engaging with IPIM, the Management Committee, through hosting, attending and delivering training and events to the IP Inclusive community. Most recently we hosted the evening talk at the IPO on mental health by Jonny Benjamin (see here), which was emotional and inspirational. For IP Inclusive week we’re putting on a number of events in Newport, to which members of the IP Inclusive community are warmly welcomed.

Over the last year we have seen inclusion become a part of everyday language. So it should be – like health and safety, and sustainability. But it isn’t just about tackling inequality or reducing discrimination. Inclusion is about giving everybody a chance to play their part; it’s about being aware of difference and making the most of it. It’s about building a culture where everybody can fulfil their full potential and they have the support, the opportunity – and the choice – to do it to the best of their ability.

This year IP Inclusive week coincides with Inter Faith week and Anti-bullying week. To raise awareness of EDI within the IPO and across the IP professions, we are taking the opportunity to foster conversations about gender diversity within IP and shine a light on faith and belief. IP Inclusive is for everyone working in IP and we would be pleased to see you if you would like to come along.

To come along to the IPO and register for the following talk and panel discussion, please email [email protected].

Staff talk: Gender profiles in worldwide patenting: an analysis of female inventorship, 13th November, 11 am – midday, B-suites

Do we have the data needed to make informed decisions on how to tackle issues of gender equality? While data on women studying or working in STEM subjects are quite comprehensive, there are fewer data on the ‘outputs’ of work undertaken by women in STEM industries. Patents are a well-known measurable ‘output’ of STEM industries, however while inventor name on patent applications is a legal requirement, disclosing gender is not. Our work uses name-datasets to infer gender of inventors and allows us to shed a light on female inventorship.

Come along to an all-staff talk to find out more from Pauline Beck, author of the updated gender inventor report:

IPO Inclusive: Faith & Belief Panel Discussion, 13th November, 12-1 pm, B-suites

All of us, whether we are of a faith or non-faith identity, have shared principles and values which frame our everyday lives. An inclusive culture that allows people to feel comfortable talking about and practising their faith or belief will help us make the IPO a “brilliant place to work”. Come along to a panel discussion, where panellists will share the stories of their belief, from Christianity to veganism, and working in the IP Industry.
